What is the Metaverse?
Metaverse is a virtual world that enables people to do the things they want: work, play, shop or socialize. It is based on an immersive and persistent three-dimensional network that merges with the physical world and spans across digital platforms.
The idea of a metaverse has been around for a long time, but it was first described in the cyberpunk novel Snow Crash. The book, which was published in 1992, imagined a shared digital space that people access through VR goggles and a fiber optics network.
In its earliest conceptions, the metaverse incorporated a VR interface, digital ownership and avatars. Its proponents also argued that it was a place where people could share experiences with others even when they couldn’t physically be together.
However, the idea has never taken off. Its upfront cost is too high and it is not a new experience for most consumers.
Among the biggest players is game developer Epic Games, which has built a metaverse for its shooter Fortnite and plans to use the Unreal Engine software to develop a virtual reality environment that will attract a billion users.
But the company is facing criticism for its lagging performance and a slew of false advertising that misleads consumers about what the platform offers. The scepticism has been heightened by the fact that its founder, Mark Zuckerberg, owns 13% of the company but controls 54% of the votes thanks to a concentration in a class of stock with super-charged rights.
