The Metaverse is a network of shared, immersive virtual worlds. It expands beyond games and can be used for socializing, work and shopping. It also incorporates aspects of virtual and augmented reality.

The metaverse is the next evolution of the internet that allows people to interact in three dimensions. Its creators claim that it will offer a new form of communication and allow us to do things we couldn’t do in the real world.
Game
Currently, the most popular use of the metaverse is in gaming. Platforms like World of Warcraft, Roblox and Fortnite are creating games that give people a semi-lifelike experience.
Technology & Security
Digital privacy experts are concerned that the metaverse would become a way for governments to track and monitor citizens, even without their knowledge. “A lot of data is being collected from the user’s eye-tracking movement, hand movements and what they’re doing in their virtual environment,” said Gartner senior principal analyst Tuong H. Nguyen in an interview with Lawton.
Business & Industrial Applications
Companies like Siemens and Facebook aim to leverage the metaverse in the business world, helping them improve operations and customer service by using interactive gameplay and simulations. This could include letting executives and managers visit a factory, distribution center or construction site on the other side of the globe, shaking hands with employees and doing inspections as if they were there.
However, the future of the metaverse is still a long way off. Mark Zuckerberg believes it will take five to 10 years before it’s widely adopted, but it’s a risk he wants to take. He recently renamed the company Meta, which will be responsible for bringing the metaverse to life and helping people connect, find communities and grow businesses.
