What is the Metaverse?
The Metaverse is a virtual world that will allow users to immerse themselves in augmented reality, mixed reality and virtual reality (AR, MR and VR) experiences. It is generally considered to be a networked virtual world where human and automated interactions occur, with users represented as avatars in the space. The term has literary origins in Neal Stephenson’s 1992 sci-fi novel Snow Crash, and it was popularized in the 2011 film Ready Player One, where everyday people strap on VR headsets to hang out in a virtual universe of their own creation.
The metaverse is the newest frontier for tech companies. Investors are pouring billions into AR, MR and VR hardware and software platforms, hoping that they can tap into an entirely new market. However, a number of factors will need to be in place before we see the metaverse take off, including accessibility and interoperability of hardware and software platforms. It’s important to educate yourself and your teams on what the metaverse is, how it works and why we are seeing so much hype around it.

The most rudimentary form of the metaverse already exists within video games. Online shooter games like Fortnite let players create and interact with virtual avatars, and they can earn virtual currency as they play. It’s a simple example, but the possibilities are limitless.
The most common way to access the metaverse is with a virtual reality headset or augmented reality smart glasses, such as Google Glass. Many experts believe that the metaverse will be accessible across a range of devices, from affordable $10 Google Cardboard headsets to high-end $300 Oculus Quest 2 headsets and $999 Valve Index VR glasses.
