Investing in the Metaverse
Metaverse is a virtual world that’s shared and interactive, like an online video game, but a lot more immersive and hyper-realistic than a simple computer game. It includes your own avatar and digital assets, which can be exchanged across platforms much as you might share a link to a website on the Internet.
In fiction, it’s often described as a 3D version of the Internet, and people access it through devices like the Metaverse Terminal that Hiro from the television series Heroes uses. The real-world technology behind this vision is starting to come together. Back-end engines are knocking down barriers to creation, as well as solving problems of bandwidth and latency. Hardware is merging physical and virtual worlds, with headsets such as the Oculus Quest 2 and Meta’s own devices gaining traction. And technology like edge computing allows data to be captured, stored, and processed locally rather than in the cloud – a huge boost for low-bandwidth areas and those with limited storage.
Investors see a huge opportunity in the metaverse. For example, BlackRock recently launched an exchange-traded fund focused on tech companies seen as connected to the concept, including chip makers Nvidia and Qualcomm, 3D simulation software firm Dassault Systemes, and games companies such as Activision Blizzard and Ubisoft. Other investors are taking a wait-and-see approach, and buying stocks in the technology that’ll be needed to create and operate the metaverse, such as VR headset maker Oculus and virtual reality software company Meta.
