The Metaverse – Connecting the Real World to the Virtual World

When you hear the term “metaverse”, what comes to mind? It is the concept of lifelike avatars within virtual reality scenarios and 3D structures. This concept has its roots in the 1992 science fiction novel Snow Crash, which was adapted into multiple media. As the technology progresses, it will become more feasible for people to interact with these avatars. However, this concept will require constant confirmation of ownership. The key to enabling this process is the use of non-fungible tokens.

The term “metaverse” was first used in 1992 by Neal Stephenson, the creator of the seminal novel Snow Crash. The concept combines virtual reality, augmented reality, video, and other forms of communication to create an alternate, hyper-real world. Virtual reality has since become an incredibly popular medium for entertainment, with online game universes providing hints of its possibilities. As a result, the companies behind popular virtual reality games have gotten involved in its development.

In 2016, Decentraland created the first virtual world, and Pokemon Go began taking the world by storm. Fortnite launched virtual concerts and tours for its players. The Walt Disney Company aims to connect the real world to the virtual one by developing a digital platform called the “Theme Park Metaverse.” Microsoft announced its Mesh platform in 2021, which allows users to access the virtual world. The tech giant also aims to create an online social network through its platform, which can be accessed through a virtual reality headset.
