What is a Metaverse?
What is a Metaverse? In simple terms, it is a game where users own virtual land. Blockchain-based apps such as SecondLive and Decentraland give users a chance to play games and earn money. Axie Infinity is one such popular metaverse, which uses Ethereum blockchain technology. Axies are non-fungible tokens and can be built from over 500 different body parts. Axies can breed up to seven times and offspring can be sold on the gaming platform.
It is a living, evolving virtual world, accessible through game consoles, desktop computers, virtual reality headsets, wristbands and glasses. It will eventually allow millions of users to work, play, and collaborate. Already, many companies are making their way into virtual space. In Decentraland, one company sold a digital plot for $2.43 million. Another company, Epic Games, announced a $1 billion funding round for Metaverse projects in April 2021.
Animoca Brands, a blockchain-based mobile game franchise, has already raised $810 million in venture funding over the past two years. Andreessen Horowitz, a VC firm in New York, is one of its top investors. Its investments have included Facebook, Airbnb, Coinbase, Lyft, and Roblox. It is now partnering with companies working on the metaverse. Andreessen Horowitz is not the only one investing in the metaverse.
Boeing has a vested interest in the metaverse, and is already experimenting with a digital world where employees can collaborate. Microsoft, the biggest competitor to Facebook, is attempting to tap into the Metaverse market with their Mesh for Microsoft Teams application. With this new platform, users can create avatars and collaborate in 3D holographic environments. Holoportation allows users to access the digital world by wearing a VR headset.
