Facebook, Oculus, and the Metaverse
Many major companies, such as Microsoft, NVIDIA, and Epic Games, have expressed interest in the metaverse, which could potentially reach 5 billion users by 2030. Yet, despite the hype, there are several downsides to the metaverse, including high volatility and regulatory uncertainty. Nevertheless, big firms with budgets and data privacy policies already in place have a major advantage over their smaller counterparts. In addition, they can afford to invest in the metaverse, which can help them gain a competitive edge over smaller companies.
While there is no universal gateway for accessing the metaverse, the hardware that is needed to enter it varies from $10 Google Cardboard to $300 Oculus Quest 2 headset and $990 Valve Index VR. Many metaverse platforms have been developed to allow for a wide variety of uses. These include gaming, virtual workspaces, live entertainment, real estate, and Fortnite, among others. Experts argue that you don’t even need a VR headset to access the metaverse.
In 1992, Neal Stephenson coined the term “metaverse” and used it to describe a virtual space in which avatars interact. Since then, the metaverse has become more advanced, including the use of augmented reality, virtual reality, and cryptocurrency. In the same way, Ernest Cline’s novel Ready Player One introduced the concept of virtual reality and its popularity has increased. More recently, Facebook acquired virtual reality platform and hardware maker Oculus in 2014.
