What is the Metaverse?
The Metaverse is the digital world that users can use to conduct online shopping. Its users can try on clothing digitally and purchase it, which will make it an economy. Similarly, avatar skins and virtual real estate will be valued in this new world. Users will be able to take these items from one platform to another, just like real-world clothes can be taken from the mall to the movie theater. The main difference between real-world clothing and virtual clothing is that most platforms tie their virtual identities to one platform. But the metaverse will let users create personas or avatars that they can easily copy from one social networking site to another.
Nvidia Corp. is building a platform to connect virtual 3D words in a shared world. The technology is also being used for building and factory simulations. Many popular brands are getting into the metaverse. Nike has partnered with Roblox, an online game creation system, to create a virtual world called Nikeland, where fans can play sports games and dress up in apparel that looks like it was created in the real world. Many other brands are getting in on the fun as well.
Currently, the technology needed to create a full-fledged metaverse is limited. It requires the convergence of a whole host of technologies to make it possible to fully experience the virtual world. The full AR experience is still three years away. It’s not surprising that Qualcomm is interested in merging with other companies that play in the headset chipsets market. That’s not surprising, given the company’s involvement in the development of virtual reality technology.
