Facebook Wants to Be More Than Just a Social Networking Site
During the company’s latest quarterly call, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg referred to his company as a “metaverse company.” While the term is new, it’s one of the strongest signals yet that the company is attempting to pivot away from its original role as a social media site.
Zuckerberg isn’t the only big tech player to invest in the metaverse. Epic Games, Microsoft, NVIDIA, and other large firms are all exploring the technology.
In fact, several of these companies have built in-house cryptocurrency marketplaces. Some of these companies are already putting out metaverse-based games, and others are planning to do so. These projects have drawn attention over the past year, and are starting to draw interest from investors.
Some of the more popular metaverses include Decentraland, SecondLive, and Axie Infinity. Each of these projects uses crypto technology to create a shared virtual world.
Users can build a virtual universe and buy land, as well as interact with others in the virtual world. They can also purchase virtual goods with cryptocurrency. Unlike traditional currencies, cryptocurrencies in a metaverse are illiquid. This means they aren’t designed for real-world use, and the value they have may crash if someone sneezes.
The crypto community is concerned about the potential for big tech companies to dominate the metaverse. They worry that such a system would be like a digital app store.
However, the metaverse is still in its infancy, and it’s still unclear how it will work. There’s also the possibility that users could lose touch with their real-world friends.
