Animoca Brands, Decentraland, and Animoca Invest in the Metaverse
The Metaverse is an entirely new concept in which people create and collaborate in virtual spaces. It is envisioned to be accessible through desktop computers, mobile devices, game consoles, and virtual reality glasses and wristbands. Eventually, it will allow millions of users to collaborate, work, and play together. Already, several companies have established their presence in this new virtual space. In February 2018, Decentraland announced a $2.43 million funding round, and Epic Games announced that it will raise $1 billion in April 2021.
The Metaverse has attracted a lot of interest amongst crypto enthusiasts, who believe that it will become the next mobile internet. Its popularity has led some industry players to invest tens of billions of dollars in the project. The company’s founder, Robby Yung, is a former hedge fund manager and is a major shareholder in NBA Top Shot creator Dapper Labs. For now, though, the project remains a mystery.
Animoca Brands is one of the earliest adopters of blockchain technologies, having suffered through the dotcom era as a mobile game maker. In recent years, it has diversified its focus to include foundational technologies in cryptocurrencies, internal product development, and non-fungible tokens. Among these companies, the unicorn – Animoca – has raised $360 million in January. Its valuation is around $5 billion.
