Facebook’s Metaverse Could Be the Next Big Thing
In a recent company call, Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg mentioned the “metaverse” as the next big thing. He even called Facebook “a metaverse company.” This is an interesting term for a social media platform, but one that is likely to change over time. The metaverse is a parallel cyberspace to our real world. In it, we interact with others in the form of avatars. As augmented reality meets physical reality, the Metaverse offers a world that is both connected and interactive.
The metaverse has numerous applications, but its real promise lies in the users. The concept of the metaverse has the potential to create in-game assets that users can trade and invest in. For example, a virtual cinema may issue tokens for people to view movies. The same tokens could also be used to buy tickets to an event or club.
With such promising features, the Metaverse is starting to gain attention. It has already attracted Facebook, which plans to invest $50 million in this venture over the next two years. It also plans to hire 10,000 people in Europe within five years. In addition to being a virtual space, the metaverse can be an integration of software and hardware, such as data centers and blockchain technology.
Other cryptocurrencies with the potential to grow the Metaverse include Enjin, Decentraland, and The Sandbox. However, these cryptocurrencies have taken a beating from recent highs. Meanwhile, video game companies are leading the way in implementing the metaverse. Robby Yung, CEO of Animoca Brands, which owns The Sandbox, is a major investor in NBA Top Shot creator Dapper Labs.
