What Is a Metaverse?

A Metaverse is a shared, immersive virtual world where people can connect with others and create games, work, shop and socialize. It is a cyberspace that may incorporate elements of virtual and augmented reality.

The earliest metaverse experiences have been built within online video games, such as Second Life and The Sims. These are simulated 3D environments that allow users to adopt new personas, cultivate hobbies, run businesses and interact with friends from around the world.

In the future, a digital metaverse will be a continuous experience that seamlessly merges online and offline lives. It will provide a more connected experience than today’s web, with customers (and businesses) able to take their identities, currencies, experiences and assets anywhere they want.

Unlike many of the internet’s current digital spaces, a metaverse won’t be owned or operated by a single platform. Instead, it will be developed by companies and collectives working under agreements and policies.

Crypto is the foundation of a metaverse and offers a wealth of potential applications. It can be used to create non-fungible tokens that give ownership of a service, right or experience in the virtual world. These can include things like an hour of a psychotherapist’s session or a ticket to a club or event.

The most successful use of cryptocurrencies in the metaverse is in virtual real estate and entertainment. Currently, there are several open metaverses that offer these services, including Sandbox and Decentraland.

The main challenge for the metaverse will be to develop trust among customers and business partners. A company’s identity, assets and transactions must be verified and secured at all times, so that consumers can feel confident they are getting the services and products they expect. These challenges will need to be addressed early in the design process.
