Business and the Metaverse

The Metaverse is an always-on, three-dimensional virtual realm that connects to the real world in a way that’s more immersive and persistent than the internet. It’s a shared, interoperable network that synchronously connects users across multiple digital platforms, where they can shop, play and work together in real time.

The term “metaverse” first appeared in Neal Stephenson’s 1992 sci-fi novel Snow Crash, and was further popularized by Earnest Cline’s 2011 book Ready Player One. In the dystopian world of the novels, users create avatars and log in to a cyberspace realm in which they can communicate with other people, buy or sell goods, and gain status based on their technical skills.

As the concept becomes more real, businesses are taking steps to prepare for its arrival and begin to develop use cases. German engineering firm Siemens plans to develop digital twins for transportation, infrastructure and energy systems, for example.

Business leaders also are creating and promoting new types of crypto currencies for use in the metaverse, including non-fungible tokens (NFTs) that can represent assets like art, music or virtual real estate. NFTs are backed by blockchain technology, a secure distributed ledger that allows the creation of new digital assets in an environment that doesn’t have any central authority.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has been vocal about his company’s interest in the metaverse. The company, now called Meta, plans to focus on bringing it to life and helping people connect, find communities and grow businesses.
