What is the Metaverse?
The Metaverse is an always-on, immersive, three-dimensional virtual world that stretches across multiple digital platforms, merges with the physical world and allows people to interact in real time.
It’s been a long-time fantasy of science fiction writers like Neal Stephenson (Snow Crash) and Ernest Cline (Ready Player One). But the technology that makes the concept possible is still in its infancy.
A lot of the tech is still under development and won’t be available to the public for years, if ever. But it is becoming a major topic of conversation and speculation.
Crypto, Nft and Game
As the technology gets more advanced, there will be a lot of opportunities to invest in. The first one is cryptocurrencies, which are based on blockchain technology and can be used to trade virtual assets like music or art.
Another is games, which are also gaining popularity in the metaverse. Popular titles like Second Life and Fortnite are already huge, but other games that allow people to build a 3D virtual world, such as Roblox, are also getting a lot of attention.
Personalisation
As people become more familiar with the metaverse, they are likely to want to personalise their avatars with clothing, poses and park benches. Some of these items can be sold to other users or traded in the metaverse for other things, such as non-fungible tokens, which represent a type of digital asset based on blockchain technology.
As for Facebook, the company’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg is a big believer in the metaverse and has launched his own pet project called Horizon Worlds. The goal is to create a persistent, 3D, synchronous, and interoperable network that spans multiple digital platforms.
