What is the Metaverse?
The Metaverse is a network of immersive virtual worlds that people can use to connect with friends, play games, work and create. It’s a future technology that is often compared to the internet in its early stages, when it was still connecting a handful of computers around the world.
A version of the Metaverse already exists in the form of augmented reality and virtual gaming. Those technologies, however, are only a small part of the larger vision for the Metaverse that many tech companies, including Facebook, have been investing in.
In the most common description, the Metaverse is a new online world independent of our physical one that allows us to interact with other users through digital avatars and engage in a seemingly limitless number of virtual experiences. This concept was popularized by science fiction writer Neal Stephenson’s 1992 novel “Snow Crash.”
The more sophisticated versions of the Metaverse are more like the online fantasy world Second Life, where users can even buy and sell land through their avatars. Other examples include the multiplayer video games Minecraft, Fortnite and Roblox, which allow users to create and share virtual environments that can be used for socializing or even working.
Regardless of which type of Metaverse you choose to invest in, cybersecurity and privacy concerns will always be major issues. But some investors are taking a more traditional approach to the Metaverse, by investing in blockchain-based platforms such as Decentraland and Sandbox that offer a way to purchase virtual real estate using non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Others have set their sights on industry giants like Apple, Microsoft and Alphabet, which have invested heavily in VR hardware and software for the Metaverse.
