The Metaverse
The metaverse is a digital space where people can interact via virtual avatars. It can be accessed using virtual reality (VR) goggles or mixed reality. Mixed reality mixes virtual objects with the real world, such as when you’re playing a game on a headset and physically pick up a toy on your coffee table to add it to your character.
The concept of the metaverse first sprang from the mind of Neal Stephenson in his 1992 sci-fi novel Snow Crash. It’s a shared virtual universe where the laws of physics don’t apply and users can create anything they desire. It’s a world where we can visit parks, restaurants and even fantasy landscapes without ever leaving our home.
Many of the technologies that will power the metaverse are already here. VR gaming is one of the most prominent examples, with games like Minecraft and Roblox offering immersive virtual worlds. The metaverse is also aided by the proliferation of AR and MR technology, which enable users to see and experience their surroundings in ways that aren’t reliant on a virtual reality headset.
It’s possible that the metaverse will become a regular part of our lives, allowing us to meet with friends in VR concerts or view art and try on clothes online. A recent survey of 624 tech innovators and business leaders found that 54% think the metaverse will be “a fully immersive, well-functioning aspect of daily life” by 2040. But there’s a lot of work to be done before we can get there.
