The concept of a digital metaverse is a game world in which players can interact and have virtual characters, or avatars. Players can choose to be in a virtual or ‘physical’ world. There are many different versions of the game. One of the most popular is the Quest 2 video game, which allows players to play a virtual version of a real-world game. Despite this game’s popularity, the Metaverse is still a relatively niche phenomenon, and its future is far from certain.
The metaverse concept was first coined by Neal Stephenson in 1992 and has evolved throughout the years, through virtual reality, augmented reality, and cryptocurrency. Virtual reality was introduced to the public by Ernest Cline in the novel Ready Player One, which later became a movie. In 2014, Facebook acquired the virtual reality hardware maker Oculus. The company also has many big-name investors backing its vision. It estimates that there will be 5 billion users of the metaverse by 2030.
The popularity of Facebook has led to concern that corporations will control the Metaverse. The idea of a community-owned and controlled metaverse is appealing to crypto kids, but the history of the internet shows that companies will win. However, blockchain technology has the potential to alter this balance. Various platform creations, commercial partnerships, and user preferences will determine the future of the Metaverse. But in the meantime, the Metaverse has the potential to change the way we live and work. In fact, the creation of games like Decentraland and The Sandbox has been praised as a way for gamers to monetize their time in the Metaverse.
