The Metaverse and Cryptocurrency
If you are familiar with the concept of blockchain technology, you are likely familiar with the term Metaverse. The metaverse is a system in which users can own and manage virtual land and play games for money. Some popular metaverses include Decentraland and Axie Infinity, which are built on the Ethereum blockchain. Axies are non-fungible tokens. Axies can be built from over 500 body components and breed up to seven times. The offspring of each breed can be traded or sold in the gaming platform.
Although cryptocurrencies such as Ethereum have fallen from recent highs, there is still a great demand for virtual worlds like the Metaverse. Many big firms, like Zoom and Animoca Brands, have invested in the metaverse. These companies are major investors in the likes of CryptoKitties, The Sandbox, and NBA Top Shot creator Dapper Labs. These firms also have their own funding, so they can afford to take a risk on an emerging market like Metaverse.
Entrepreneurs will drive the metaverse’s growth. They’ll provide services, create content, and do useful things for the metaworld. They’ll have to monetize their services in order to survive in this new environment. For example, a movie theatre might issue tokens to watch movies for a specific period of time. Alternatively, tokens could be used as passes to events or even to an entirely new planet. With the advent of a new type of currency, the Metaverse will become a powerful hub for innovation and discovery.
