Facebook’s Metaverse Is Just Getting Started
A new world of virtual reality is taking shape, and a company called Zoom is hosting it. Founder Robby Yung, who is also the CEO of Animoca Brands, a company that owns The Sandbox, is betting big on the Metaverse. The Sandbox is an online game creation platform, and Yung is also a major investor in CryptoKitties and NBA Top Shot creator Dapper Labs.
Microsoft is already planning to build its own metaverse. Users of Teams will be able to access virtual spaces by 2022, and this concept will be a blend of software, hardware, and blockchain technology. The vision behind Metaverse is not clear, but it’s promising to provide a new level of entertainment and gaming. The main goal of the metaverse is to let people interact with AI avatars and make friends. While gamers will be able to create games and social experiences, there will likely be some elements of play-to-earn.
Incentivizing users is key to creating a community-built Metaverse. The infrastructure for a metaverse has been created with crypto-asset protocols like NFTs. Facebook is already living online; the frequency of posts reveals personal information. Facebook clearly believes in the Metaverse as the next evolution of social media. Implementing a play-to-earn model for Metaverse will be key to its success across the world.
