Animoca Brands Launches Blockchain Game Metaverse

A new game called Metaverse is taking blockchain gaming to new heights. Animoca Brands, a company that makes the popular mobile game Crazy Kings, introduced a play-to-earn model, wherein players compete for crypto tokens. The company partnered with cultural icon Bored Ape Yacht Club to develop a blockchain game, and has since inked 24 metaverse venture deals, including 139 with 10 top investment firms.

Though the Metaverse does not yet have a unified gateway, its platforms will be compatible with a variety of hardware, from the $10 Google Cardboard to the $999 Valve Index VR headset. Metaverse users will use the internet to access the shared virtual world, and they will have their own avatar. There are no standards for what a metaverse experience will look like, and early examples include Minecraft, real estate, and gaming. Though the future of virtual reality is still in its early days, the technology behind Metaverse will likely make the world of VR more accessible and easier to use for everyone.

The concept of a single virtual world has been conceived by some developers, and the term “metaverse” was first coined in 1992 by Neal Stephenson, a science fiction author. This concept has evolved through various technological advances, including virtual reality, augmented reality, and cryptocurrency. Virtual reality was made widely available after the release of Ernest Cline’s “Ready Player One” in 2018, and Facebook bought VR hardware and software developer Oculus in 2014.
