The Metaverse consists of a variety of new technologies, including XR (extended reality) to provide an immersive experience, digital twins to map the real world, and blockchain to construct a credit system, economic system, and exchange system. It realizes the close connection between social, economic and identity systems in the virtual and real world.
Many of the nascent metaverse games incorporate assets such as nonfungible tokens (NFTs) or digital tokens that are tradable for money, making them an attractive way to earn money and build wealth. Some even allow players to quit their day jobs and focus on gaming to make a living.
While some people have a positive view of the metaverse, others see it as a dystopian cyber surveillance state, leaning on systems of abuse and inequality. Nevertheless, the metaverse is the next step in the development of the internet, and its benefits will have a big impact on business operations, according to experts Lawton spoke with.
Some experts say the technology could improve teleworker camaraderie, speed up training, reduce the need for office space and make work a happier place in general. The tech will also free workers from geographical and economic limits, opening up new opportunities to people around the world.
