Investing in the Metaverse

A world outside the physical one where people can socialize and engage in a seemingly unlimited variety of virtual experiences, all supported with its own digital economy. The Metaverse is predicted to become a lucrative market to the tune of $800 billion by 2024, and the technology platforms that make up its infrastructure are already generating significant investment.

There is little doubt that the vision of the metaverse is a fascinating one. But it is still early to assess its impact on the wider global economy and its potential to create a safe and responsible immersive environment.

It’s important to note that a number of metaverse components have been explored by organizations across industries and are evolving in new ways as they interconnect, according to Gartner analysts Marty Resnick and George Korizis. They include extended reality headsets, blockchain and nonfungible tokens (NFTs), IoT, cloud technologies and more.

But despite these opportunities, IT leaders should be careful when investing in a specific metaverse component. This is because there are many dark sides to the technology, including regulatory uncertainty, money laundering and counterfeit NFTs, according to Citi GPS’ recent report.

The main point is that companies will need to focus on trust and values when they’re in the metaverse, especially if the ecosystem evolves into a more centralized model with less organic relationships between participants. This means that organizations will need to pay attention to the data they collect on their users, as well as privacy issues.
