Animoca Brands, Facebook, and the Metaverse
Animoca Brands, which is the maker of the virtual playground known as Metaverse, has been the focus of a recent hype cycle. Founder Yat Siu, who has over 200 investments under his belt, started out as a mobile game developer during the dotcom boom. After experiencing financial and regulatory difficulties dealing with cryptocurrencies, he bolted into the metaverse, where he invests in foundational technologies for cryptocurrencies. He is currently focused on non-fungible tokens, which are a way to store value and authenticate ownership on a digital ledger. The trading volume of these tokens soared to over $25 billion last year.
The Facebook CEO recently mentioned the concept of the “metaverse” during a recent call with investors. He dubbed the social network a “metaverse company,” while making references to cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens. Several coins and tokens related to the metaverse have soared over 100% in the past 24 hours, with the highest gains coming from starlink, decentraland, and the sandbox.
One of the most prominent features of the Metaverse is its blockchain technology, which allows users to create objects and worlds. One popular metaverse is Decentraland, which uses the Ethereum blockchain. The game allows players to purchase land tokens, or Axies. These non-fungible tokens are used to purchase real estate on the virtual world. Axies can be bred up to seven times, with the offspring being sold on the platform.
