What is the Metaverse?
In the early 1880s, people might have had some idea of what an automobile was like, but they had not seen one. The same thing holds true for the Metaverse, which exists in the same space as the physical world but is completely different. It is possible to imagine what it might be like to live in a metaverse – you may even have the chance to see your future self in one! But there are still many questions. What is the Metaverse?
The term metaverse was coined by science fiction author Neal Stephenson in his 1992 novel Snow Crash. It was later used to describe interactive 3D worlds, which have many uses in today’s technology and gaming. In fact, the concept of the metaverse overlaps multiple fields, from gaming to information technology to 3D rendering. In other words, a metaverse is an online universe made up of multiple virtual worlds. This idea is not only fascinating but also futuristic.
Epic Games is already making investments in the Metaverse. Their popular games like Fortnite are a major part of the gaming community, and their metaverse could simplify player interactions. That could mean more services for players, and an opportunity for Epic Games to showcase its own in-house games. The popular movie Ready Player One also featured a virtual metaverse, called OASIS. Designed to be a “total immersion” gaming system, the OASIS could be used in future open-world games.
