The Metaverse and the Workplace
The Metaverse, also called the omniverse or metaverse economy, is a virtual space in which people work and play. It’s a mashup of immersive technology and social connectivity and could have a bigger impact on the world than the internet did, experts say. But the Metaverse is in its early stages and will be difficult to navigate until companies gain a better understanding of what it’s capable of and how it can be used in the workplace.
The Metaverse can be seen in online games, like Roblox, Minecraft and Second Life, where people use avatars to interact and share their creations with others. It’s also present in livestreaming and streaming services, with some of the biggest players in the field — such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitch — exploring ways to add this new dimension to their products.
Companies can build their own Metaverses, a virtual space that lets them connect with workers and customers. But this can be expensive, and companies should focus on integrating it into their existing processes and training employees to use it.
If done well, the Metaverse will increase teleworker camaraderie, improve collaboration, speed up training, reduce the need for office space and make work a happier place in general. But it could also eliminate jobs and require companies to retrain employees, analysts warn. It’s unclear how many people will have the hardware necessary to access the Metaverse, and some may feel uncomfortable using it for long periods of time, especially if they’re forced to do so in order to get their jobs done.
