Is Facebook a Threat to the Metaverse?

There’s no denying the potential of the Metaverse, a technology that allows gamers to interact with virtual characters from other worlds. And it’s not just games, either. As the world of Animoca Brands has shown, the potential is vast. The company has raked in $810 million in funding over the past two years, partnering with the metaverse VC specialist Liberty City Ventures in New York and investors such as Soros Fund Management and Winkelvoss Capital. And in January, it closed on $360 million in funding for a $5 billion valuation.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has lauded the concept of a metaverse and announced plans to rename its parent company to Meta Platforms Inc., which will be known as the “future of the Internet.” Meanwhile, companies like Epic Games, NASCAR, Microsoft, and the Walt Disney Company have all announced plans to participate in the metaverse. Regardless of the companies’ plans, many believe the metaverse is the next big leap in modern technology.

Facebook has received criticism in the past over its privacy policies, fake news, and hate speech. While Facebook has a commitment to building the Metaverse responsibly, many crypto enthusiasts remain skeptical. In the past, the company has promised to work with external firms to implement its technology. But in the crypto world, some believe the company could undermine the Metaverse’s development. One crypto fund manager, Yat Siu, called Facebook a “dangerous threat.”
