Facebook and the Metaverse – The Next Chapter in the Internet

The Metaverse is a virtual world based on blockchain technology, where users can create virtual land and earn revenue from it. Some of the most popular Metaverses include Decentraland, Axie Infinity, and SecondLive. These are built using Ethereum blockchain technology. Players can acquire “Axies,” non-fungible tokens that can be used to purchase virtual land. Axies can also be bred with other Axies. In fact, a single Axie can be bred up to seven times, and offspring can be sold on the platform.

In the Metaverse, users create their own virtual space and interact with other users using an online avatar. This means users can freely move, talk, and take action in the virtual space. They can also own virtual property, and can sell it or trade it for a non-fungible token. This allows users to interact with others in a way they wouldn’t be able to in real life.

Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg recently described the metaverse as the next chapter in the internet, sparking public interest in the concept. The metaverse allows people to gather with friends, work, or play, communicate with others, or learn about new ideas. The concept is so compelling that many Silicon Valley technologists believe the metaverse will become the next major leap in modern technology.

In an effort to accelerate development of these technologies, Facebook launched the Horizon Worlds VR space in late 2021, a virtual world that allows users to move around as their avatar. Facebook is also providing tools for developers to create their own virtual worlds. The social network also partnered with Epic Games, makers of the popular online shooter game Fortnite and the Unreal Engine software.
