Facebook’s Metaverse – The Next Big Leap in Technology?
Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been talking about the metaverse a lot lately, renaming the social network and WhatsApp “Meta.” He outlined plans to create a digital world that would allow people to work, communicate, and relax in real-time. This concept is already catching on in Silicon Valley, where people are eager to see how the technology can change the way we live our lives. Zuckerberg argues that the Metaverse is the next big leap in modern technology.
In 2021, a global pandemic forced a lot of people to play NFTs, and the resulting monetary system is likely to continue to affect many industries. The recent rise of the value of a cryptocurrency called AXIe Infinity Shards, for example, has pushed many blockchain games into the spotlight. However, this has also caused some companies to ban decentralized games, such as Axie, from Steam.
The metaverse is a virtual world where avatars can interact with other avatars. These ‘worlds’ can be accessed through virtual reality headsets. In order to make them viable, these virtual worlds must be “decentralized’. Blockchain technology, which enables networks without central control, has been used in metaverses like The Sandbox. In addition to blockchain technology, non-fungible tokens allow for permanent storage of ownership rights.
The Metaverse is not completely defined yet. It’s unclear how it will work in the near future, but it’s clearly an interesting concept. Facebook’s NFTs are a prime example, and Facebook and Google’s own Metaverse are likely to follow suit in the future. Microsoft is likely to be the biggest competitor of Facebook, with its Holoportation platform, which allows users to use VR headsets to access a virtual environment.
