The Future of the Metaverse
Metaverse is a blockchain-based virtual world where users own virtual land and play games in order to earn money. Some of the biggest metaverses include Decentraland and Axie Infinity. These virtual worlds are built on the Ethereum blockchain, and their currencies, dubbed Axies, are non-fungible tokens that allow players to buy virtual items and play games. Axies can also be bred with other Axies to create offspring, which can then be sold on the gaming platform.
While there are still a lot of uncertainties in the future of the metaverse, some major companies have already made plans to explore it. Some of these companies include Microsoft, NVIDIA, and Epic Games. In addition, VISA, the financial services company, has acquired the first NFT and invested $150,000 in it. Popular brands like Coca-Cola and Gucci are also entering the metaverse. Gucci, for instance, has collaborated with the popular online game creation platform Roblox. Gucci has sold digital accessories in the form of NFTs, while Coca-Cola has also sold digital tokens for its customers to use in the metaverse.
While the metaverse is already a very promising technology, the real promise lies in the users. Unlike standard VR experiences, metaverse gamers can engage with other people, interact with other players, and even build relationships. Moreover, there will be a significant emphasis on play-to-earn activities, such as acquiring valuable non-fungible items and selling them to other users. For the future of the metaverse, it is vital that the blockchain that supports it is secure and interoperable.
